A Little Mutual Back Scratching
Regarding Rick Warren’s decision to give the prayer at Barack Obama’s inauguration, assume for a moment that we had just elected a man to be president who, during the campaign, spoke to a rally of the Ku Klux Klan – all the while reassuring us how important his Christian faith is to him. Let’s also assume that, during this rally, he told the assembled cone heads that he thinks America should return to the times when only white male landowners were allowed to vote.
The question is, could anyone in America be stupid enough to think that Rick Warren would give the invocation for this guy’s inauguration? Do they think we’d be hearing all this warm-fuzzy rhetoric about “coming together” and “setting aside our differences” or any of the other touchy-feely emotions we now find so trendy? Believe me, anyone who thinks that would happen has lost contact with the mother ship.
I suggest that we take off the rose-colored glasses for a moment. The cold fact is that this sorry situation is nothing more than an arranged marriage motivated by politics and ambition.
On one hand, Obama needs someone who can give him cover with the Christian community. His goal is to hide from them the fact that he is a heretic and moral degenerate. He chose Warren for this job because he knows that (a) Warren has “street cred” within the targeted demographic group and (b) the vast majority of the people in this particular group are too naïve to see that they are being played. He also knows that, as pro-lifers go, Warren is “safe” because he has shown that–regardless of what he says about abortion–it is not an issue he cares much about and it is certainly not one for which he will fight. In the same way some people used to say,” I’m not a racist, one of my best friends is black,” Obama can now say, “I’m not a baby-killer, one of my best friends is pro-life.”
Meanwhile, Rick Warren’s willingness to become Obama’s token pro-lifer is part of an extended job interview. He knows that Billy Graham is nearing the end of his life and that the job of “America’s Preacher and Spiritual Guru to the White House” is about to be available. He also knows that, in order to ascend into this role, he will have to throw the unborn under the bus. After all, he’s watched Graham do it for the last 35 years. It’s called “selling out” and for those who covet a seat at the tables of power, more often than not it’s just the cost of doing business. Such is the nature of political life in a nation that no longer places any value on principles and statesmanship.
Now, for those of you who will inevitably accuse me of being unfairly cynical here, let me suggest that January 20th will tell the tale. If I am wrong about Rick Warren, then he will use this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pray for mercy for the unborn and ask God to soften Obama’s heart toward them. While he’s at it, he will also call America to repentance and beg God’s forgiveness for the 50 million defenseless children we have already slaughtered.
Anyone taking bets?

Anybody out there like this idea or have any other suggestions? I really think we need to be aggressive and take the offensive here and NOT accept continuing unlimited abortion crime in this country.
I appreciate your article. There aren't too many that are speaking out as you have done (Joseph Farah of World Net Daily and Operation Rescue come to mind), but I agree with you.
I hate to be critical of a fellow pastor but Rick Warren is a compromiser at best. I have read his writings, watched him on TV/video, and seen his involvement in various interfaith gatherings. Preaching the Gospel and standing for life and not things he does with much gusto.
So, keep speaking out and standing for life my friend. I appreciate your courage!
Pastor Glen
Pro-life legislative leaders have influence over other voters. One person said to me that the most pro-life legislator she knew was supporting the pro-choice candidate and if that candidate was good enough for the pro-life legislator, then it would be good enough for her.
I am not sure why pro-life people are throwing the babies under the bus... I suspect part of the explanation has something to do with the herd mentality and many people in government have become "party animals".
I think more of us need to call our own people on the carpet when they screw up, if we want to make any gains.
has been elected President. I will work even harder in the
pro-life ministry. We must never give up in the pro-life
movement to save unborn children and minister to those
physically and/or psychologically injured by abortion.
I am concerned that the tone of this article is much akin to those who criticized Jesus for dining and partying with prostitutes and tax collectors.
I wonder if the criticisms of the elder Graham is not born from some jealousy. Please do not begrudge (or judge) brother Warren for being able to move in the halls of power. It may be God's only way to reach them. Not
because God cannot do it another way...but because they many not be able to hear it any other way.
Would you be the one who stands before a righteous God and explain that because you criticized another brother's effort to stand in the gap, several more souls have been lost to hell? I understand your passion. And I love
you for it. But take a step back and look at the big picture. Look at it with a Kingdom perspective.
On stage at Pastor Rick's Forum he asked Obama how he felt about abortion and Obama stated that he was (of course) very concerned with reducing the number of abortions yet the VERY FIRST DAY IN OFFICE he repealed the Mexico City Act which uses OUR tax dollars to fund abortions in other countries! I can only hope that Pastor Rick called Obama to voice his concern!
While Planned Parenthood is rejoicing that Obama is President, I (like most Christians) are in mourning.....BUT we will be silent NO more. Although I have been involved with the prolife movement for years...I lost my passion after SO many years of not seeing a change...well that time is over and I am back in the game! See you in the picket lines!!

I don't think silence is the answer. A firm stand by God's people certainly is. Silence is what allowed RvW to make abortion legal to begin with -- the church sat back and did nothing. I'm not looking for RvW to be overturned, because in all reality it never will be. I am, however, looking for the hearts of those seeking abortion to be changed, the hearts of those supporting abortion to be changed, and the hearts of the abortionists to be changed. How, with education and with people speaking out about what abortion has affected them, and with committed prayer warriors! Listen, over 1/2 of the abortion clinics have been closed down (now that could affect the #'s)! And there are not many new recruits.
As for Warren, he had the entire nation listening to him. He had a chance to say something profound, not that seeker-sensitive junk. I've heard the prayers of Graham, and he did in fact speak truth in his prayers -- Warren doesn't even compare. Read the one from Clinton's inaugeration. This is a sign of the times and God's orchestrating His plan. Obama is in office because God put him there (Rom 13). Doesn't mean we sit down and shut up. We will be held accountable for not standing up for life. If we are not part of the "solution", then we are part of the problem.
You make some good points. I personally doubt if the numbers will go down under this administration; however, I am opposed to condemning every leader who attends a Democratic party event. I believe that prayer is the only way to end abortion. According to some, Christians (whether Catholic or Protestant) account for about 70% of all abortions in the U.S. It is my opinion, and even if the actual percentage is around 50%, that the Church is the key to this issue. If the people of God hurl insults at the "others" who don't agree with them, and then secretly agree with the murder of babies by way of actually having hundreds of thousands of abortions, then abortion will not end. I propose that churches all over the nation should begin to pray for the Church in America that she would truly love righteousness and hate wickedness. Also, if some of the Christians parents in this nation could start educating their own children on sex (in tenderness and humility without shaming them), rather than allowing their peers and teachers to instruct them on these matters, perhaps just that alone would reduce the numbers. But for certain, prayer will be the only way the abortion issue improves or resolves.
So, you can picket and complain about those horrible democrats and their atrocious laws or you can begin to see that the problem is much more complex and requires much humility and prayer on the part of believers. You see, its perfectly legal in some states to marry your relatives, but people don't do it because they believe it is wrong. The same could happen with abortion. BUT THE REAL REASON ABORTION WAS UPHELD SEVERAL TIMES BY THE SUPREME COURT IS THAT THE PEOPLE (INCLUDING MANY CHRISTIANS) AGREE WITH IT. Most polls show that 50% of Americans think abortion should be legal in some forms. That's the problem, and standing in line holding up venomous words on a piece of poster board isn't likely to change anything. Faith, hope, and love just might. Especially love. I disagree with abortion, and I disagree with angry Christians who are so quick to throw one another under the proverbial bus for whatever reason. We need to unite and pray for righteousness to reign in the Church. Only then will the world around us begin to be transformed.
